Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh: Location, Timings, Tickets Cost

Satpura National Park is one of central India’s most varied wildlife destinations, with rugged sandstone hills, deep valleys, teak and sal forests, grasslands, streams and the Tawa reservoir landscape. Located in Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh, the National Park covers about 528.73 sq km and forms part of the larger Satpura Tiger Reserve with Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary and adjoining buffer forests.

The National Park was declared in 1981, while the wider tiger reserve came under Project Tiger in 1999-2000. Satpura Tiger Reserve covers about 2,133.30 sq km, including 1,339.26 sq km of core habitat and 794.04 sq km of buffer. Tigers, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, wild dogs, giant squirrels, sambar and more than 300 bird species occur here. Unlike many tiger reserves, Satpura also offers boating, canoeing, walking, trekking and cycling in approved tourism areas.

Satpura National Park Timings

Satpura follows seasonal entry and exit times linked to daylight. The official reserve website currently lists winter rounds at roughly 6:00 AM-10:00 AM and 2:30 PM-5:30 PM, while summer timings move to about 5:45 AM-9:30 AM and 3:00 PM-6:30 PM. The time printed on the confirmed permit should always be treated as final because local conditions can change the schedule.

The main core tourism season generally runs from mid-October to June 30. Core safari tourism closes during the monsoon, while Pachmarhi remains open through the year. Madhya Pradesh tiger reserves also observe a half-day closure on Wednesday, so the booking calendar should be checked before planning an afternoon excursion.

Satpura National Park Ticket Cost

Safari cost has more than one component. The forest permit is booked through MP Online, while vehicle and guide charges are separate and are collected for the excursion. The official Satpura tariff currently displays these activity rates:

ActivityCore AreaBuffer Zone
Single seat in light vehicle₹400 / ₹500₹200
Full light vehicle, max 6 persons₹2,400 / ₹3,000₹1,200
Foreign visitor – single seat₹1,000₹200
Foreign visitor – full vehicle₹6,000₹1,200
Guide – G-1, one round₹600₹600
Guide – G-2, one round₹480₹480

The reserve shows paired core rates for some categories, so the applicable amount depends on the relevant date or booking category. MP Online also warns for the 2026-27 season that a further rate revision has been proposed and any approved difference may be collected at the gate. Readers should therefore use the official booking total for their exact date instead of relying on old package prices.

Madhai Safari Zone

Madhai is Satpura’s best-known wildlife entry point. Its routes pass through teak and mixed forest, meadows and areas close to the Tawa backwaters. Vehicle numbers are limited, which gives the zone a quieter feel than many heavily visited tiger reserves. Gaur, sambar, chital, wild boar, sloth bear, wild dog and leopard may be seen, while tiger sightings depend completely on natural movement.

Churna, Jamanidev and Parsapani

Churna

Churna offers a deeper forest experience with broad meadows and a long approach through the reserve. The official tourism information allows suitable pollution-free four-wheel vehicles here subject to park permission and operating rules.

Jamanidev and Parsapani

These buffer tourism areas lie near Madhai and are useful alternatives when core permits are unavailable. Buffer zones remain part of the wider tiger landscape, so predators and herbivores can move through them and wildlife sightings can still be rewarding.

Boating, Canoeing and Walking

Satpura is unusual because visitors can experience the reserve from both land and water. The official tariff lists canoeing or paddle-boating in the core at ₹400 per person, morning or evening motor-boat rounds at ₹400 per person and full-day motor-boat excursions at ₹800 per person. An authorised guide charge is listed separately.

Walking, trekking and cycling are permitted only on designated routes. Visitors cannot leave a normal safari vehicle and walk independently through core forest areas.

Wildlife at Satpura

Satpura is important for much more than tigers. Leopard, dhole, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, pangolin, Indian giant squirrel and flying squirrel occur in the landscape. The reserve also supports more than 300 bird species and has reintroduced hard-ground barasingha, adding another important conservation story to the park.

Pachmarhi and Other Attractions

The wider reserve includes the Pachmarhi landscape, where tourism focuses on waterfalls, viewpoints, religious sites and trekking. Popular places include Dhoopgarh, Bee Fall, Rajat Prapat, Apsara Vihar, Handi Kho and the Mahadeo-Chauragarh area. More than 50 prehistoric rock shelters have also been recorded in the reserve landscape, some with paintings thousands of years old.

How to Reach Satpura National Park

By Road

Madhai is roughly 140 km from Bhopal via Narmadapuram and Sohagpur. Pachmarhi is about 210 km from Bhopal. The Churna side is approached through Itarsi and Bhoura. Road travel is the most practical option because Satpura’s tourism gates are spread across a large landscape.

By Train

Useful railway stations include Itarsi, Sohagpur, Pipariya and Narmadapuram. Pipariya is convenient for Pachmarhi, while Sohagpur is practical for Madhai.

By Air

Bhopal is the most useful major airport, with Jabalpur and Nagpur as alternatives. Accommodation should be selected only after the safari gate is confirmed because staying near Pachmarhi can leave a visitor far from Madhai or Churna before an early-morning drive.

Best Time to Visit Satpura National Park

November to March is the most comfortable period, with cooler weather suited to safaris, birding and walking activities. March to May becomes hotter but can be productive for wildlife viewing as animals visit dependable water sources more often. The monsoon is better for Pachmarhi scenery than for core wildlife safaris, which remain seasonally closed.

How Much Time Is Needed?

Two nights and two to three days suit most first-time visitors. This allows two wildlife excursions and time for a boat or buffer experience. Travellers adding Pachmarhi should keep another day or two because its viewpoints and waterfalls lie in a different part of the reserve landscape.

FAQs

Q. Is a tiger sighting guaranteed at Satpura?

No. Tigers are completely wild, and sightings depend on route, weather, vegetation and animal movement. Satpura is best enjoyed for its full forest experience.

Q. Is Madhai the best zone for a first visit?

Madhai is the most popular first choice because it combines core forest, wildlife routes and access to water-based activities. Churna and the buffer zones offer different landscapes.

Q. Can visitors use their own car in Churna?

Suitable four-wheel vehicles can be permitted in Churna under reserve rules, but this does not mean unrestricted private driving throughout the tiger reserve.

Q. Are Jamanidev and Parsapani worth booking?

Yes. These buffer routes can produce good wildlife sightings and are useful when Madhai core permits are unavailable.

Q. Can tourists walk inside Satpura?

Only on approved walking or trekking routes under the reserve’s ecotourism rules. Walking independently through ordinary core safari areas is not allowed.

Q. Is Pachmarhi part of Satpura Tiger Reserve?

Yes. Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary forms part of the wider tiger reserve and offers waterfalls, viewpoints, pilgrimage sites and trekking rather than a standard Madhai-style safari experience.

Q. Is one safari enough?

One drive gives an introduction, but two safaris at different times of day usually provide a more complete experience. Adding a boat or buffer excursion makes a short stay more varied.

Q. Why should the safari gate be chosen before the hotel?

Satpura’s gates are far apart. Staying near the wrong tourism zone can create a long pre-dawn transfer and increase the risk of missing the reporting time.
