Van Vihar National Park, Bhopal: Location, Timings, Tickets Cost

Van Vihar National Park is one of Bhopal’s most unusual wildlife attractions because it combines the legal status of a national park with the visitor facilities of a modern zoological park. Spread along the eastern bank of the Upper Lake, it covers 445.21 hectares and was declared a national park in 1983. A landscape that was once heavily degraded has been restored into woodland, grassland, wetland and lakeside habitat.

Free-ranging herbivores such as spotted deer, sambar, nilgai and blackbuck move through the park, while rescued or captive carnivores including tigers, lions, leopards, sloth bears and hyenas are housed in large near-natural enclosures. Its position beside the Upper Lake, part of the Bhoj Wetland Ramsar Site, also makes Van Vihar an important birding destination. More than 210 bird species have been recorded, with over 80 migratory species visiting in winter.

Visitors can explore Van Vihar on foot, by bicycle, golf cart or the park’s safari vehicle. Opening hours change seasonally, and the current fee structure shown on the official park website was revised by the Madhya Pradesh government from November 1, 2024.

How the Van Vihar Safari Experience Is Different

Van Vihar is not a conventional wilderness safari reserve like Kanha or Bandhavgarh. Herbivores such as chital, sambar, nilgai and blackbuck move freely through much of the park, while major carnivores are kept in large secured enclosures under zoo-management standards.

The park safari vehicle is therefore a convenient sightseeing option rather than a tiger-tracking drive. It is useful for families, senior citizens and visitors who do not want to walk or cycle the full route. Tiger, lion, leopard, sloth bear and hyena viewing takes place at managed enclosures, so the experience is closer to a near-natural zoological park than to an unrestricted jungle safari.

Wildlife at Van Vihar

Free-ranging wildlife includes sambar, spotted deer, nilgai, blackbuck, chousingha, wild boar, jackal, hare and porcupine. The managed collection includes tigers, lions, leopards, sloth bears and hyenas, along with gharials, crocodiles, turtles, star tortoises and snakes.

Van Vihar also works as a rescue and conservation centre. It has supported conservation breeding involving species such as the Royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, hard-ground barasingha and Gyps vultures. Many large captive animals have reached the park through rescue, rehabilitation or transfer programmes rather than deliberate capture from the wild.

Birdwatching and the Upper Lake

The Upper Lake gives Van Vihar a strong wetland character. More than 210 bird species have been recorded, and winter attracts over 80 migratory species. Bar-headed geese, pintails, red-crested pochards, gadwalls, common teal, spoonbills, storks and herons are among the seasonal visitors. November to February is therefore the most rewarding period for bird-focused visits.

Butterfly Park and Interpretation Centres

The Butterfly Park is an open natural area planted with host and nectar species that help butterflies complete their normal life cycle. The two-hectare Bird Interpretation Centre explains nests, habitats, behaviour and migration, while Vihar Vithika uses displays and models to introduce visitors to wildlife conservation. These facilities add educational value for families and school groups.

Cycling and Walking at Van Vihar

Cycling is one of Van Vihar’s most distinctive visitor experiences. Travellers can bring their own bicycle or rent one from the park. The tourism route of roughly five kilometres between the gates passes lakeside scenery, woodland and wildlife areas. Walking is cheaper and works well in the cooler months, while cycling or a park vehicle is more comfortable during Bhopal’s hotter weather.

How to Reach Van Vihar National Park

Van Vihar is located on Bhadbhada Road within Bhopal, so reaching it is far easier than travelling to most Indian national parks.

By Air

Raja Bhoj Airport is about 12 km away according to the Bhopal district administration. Taxis and app-based cabs are readily available.

By Train

Bhopal Junction is about 5 km from the park according to district tourism information. Rani Kamlapati station is another convenient rail arrival point within the city.

By Road

Local buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws and private vehicles connect the park with the rest of Bhopal. Its location beside the Upper Lake also makes it easy to combine with nearby city attractions.

Best Time to Visit Van Vihar

October to March offers the most comfortable conditions for general sightseeing. November to February is particularly good for migratory birds. Van Vihar generally remains accessible during the monsoon as well, making it a useful nature outing when many central Indian tiger reserves are closed. April to June can become very hot around midday.

How Much Time Is Needed?

Most visitors need about two to four hours for the principal animal areas and lakeside scenery. Walking or cycling and spending time at the interpretation centres can extend the visit to half a day.
