Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand: Location, Timings, Tickets Cost

Jim Corbett National Park is India’s oldest national park and one of the country’s best-known wildlife destinations. Located around Ramnagar in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district, it is part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, a landscape of sal forest, grasslands, rivers, hills and reservoirs known for Royal Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, deer, crocodiles and rich birdlife.

The protected area was established as Hailey National Park in 1936 and renamed Corbett National Park in 1956 in honour of hunter-turned-naturalist Jim Corbett. The National Park covers about 520.82 sq km, while the wider Corbett Tiger Reserve extends across about 1,288.31 sq km. Project Tiger was also launched at Corbett in 1973.

Visitors should know that Corbett does not have one single tourist entrance. Safari tourism is divided among zones such as Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Garjia, Durgadevi, Sonanadi, Pakhro and Dhikala, each with its own gate, season and permit availability.

Jim Corbett National Park Safari Timings

Day safaris operate in morning and afternoon shifts, but there is no single timetable for every zone. Current official information for Bijrani and Dhela lists morning safaris from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM and afternoon safaris from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Jhirna generally allows about three and a half hours of exploration per shift.

Exact gate timings can change with season and daylight, so the time printed on the confirmed permit should be treated as final. Visitors should reach the assigned gate early because late arrival can result in losing the safari slot.

Jim Corbett National Park Ticket Cost

Corbett does not use a simple per-person zoo-style entry ticket. A Jeep Safari booking combines the safari permit, authorised gypsy and nature-guide charges. The following figures reflect the official tariff available in September 2026; portal or solid-waste-management charges may be added during booking.

Day Jeep Safari Cost for Indian Visitors

Pakhro₹3,380₹2,800₹1,000₹7,180

*The totals combine the listed permit, vehicle and guide charges but exclude any extra portal or waste-management charge. The foreigner permit is currently ₹6,680 in the listed jeep zones. If a booking includes a foreign national, foreign rates apply to all passengers on that permit.

A day-safari permit allows up to six visitors; the official pricing information states this may include up to two children below 12. Only authorised safari vehicles and guides are allowed inside the Corbett Tiger Reserve tourism zones.

Dhikala Canter Safari Cost

Dhikala is different from the regular Jeep Safari zones. Day visitors cannot book an ordinary jeep safari there; they can use the shared Canter Safari or enter through an eligible forest-rest-house night-stay booking.

Visitor CategoryCurrent Canter Fare
Indian visitor₹1,500 + 18% GST per seat
Foreign visitor₹3,000 + 18% GST per seat

The Canter is a shared 16-seater vehicle, and the fare includes the safari permit, vehicle and guide components. Advance booking is advisable during the main season.

Wildlife Safari Experience

Corbett offers a genuine wilderness safari rather than a guaranteed tiger-viewing experience. Visitors travel through natural forest tracks in authorised open gypsies, while Dhikala day visitors use the larger Canter. Depending on the zone, scenery ranges from sal woodland and grasslands to riverine forest and dry stream beds.

Tigers are the main attraction, but the reserve also supports Asian elephants, chital, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, jackals and leopards. Rivers and water bodies are home to gharials, mugger crocodiles and many water birds. Corbett is also an important birdwatching destination with hundreds of recorded species.

Which Safari Zone Is Best?

Bijrani is a popular first choice because of its varied habitat and convenient access from Ramnagar. Jhirna and Dhela are useful when travelling in periods when seasonal zones are closed. Dhikala is known for broad grasslands and reservoir views, but day access is mainly by Canter. No zone can guarantee a tiger sighting because wildlife moves freely across the reserve.

How to Reach Jim Corbett National Park

Ramnagar is the main transport base for the better-known Corbett gates. It has a railway station, hotels and easy road access to safari entry points.

By Train

Ramnagar Railway Station is the most convenient railhead for the Ramnagar-side zones. Taxis and local vehicles are available for hotels and safari gates.

By Road

Uttarakhand Tourism places the Delhi-to-Corbett road journey at roughly 270 km and around six to seven hours under normal conditions. Travel time can rise on weekends and holidays.

By Air

Pantnagar is the nearest airport commonly used for the Ramnagar side; official zone information places it at about 90 km from Bijrani and Dhela. Pakhro-side visitors may also consider Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport depending on their route.

Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett National Park

November to March is the most comfortable period for most travellers, with pleasant daytime weather and major seasonal zones normally open. Winter is also excellent for birdwatching. April to mid-June is hotter but can be rewarding for wildlife viewing as animals often gather near water sources.

During the monsoon, access becomes limited. Jhirna and Dhela are listed for year-round operation subject to weather, while several major zones close. Visitors travelling in the rainy season should always check the live official permit calendar.

How Much Time Is Needed?

One Jeep Safari normally takes about three to three and a half hours inside the zone, plus travel and reporting time. A one-night stay can work for a short trip, but two nights are better if wildlife is the main purpose. Travellers interested in photography or birdwatching often book more than one safari in different shifts or zones.

FAQs

Q. Is a tiger sighting guaranteed in Jim Corbett National Park?

No. Tigers move freely across a large natural habitat, so sightings depend on animal movement, weather, luck and the safari route.

Q. Can tourists take their own car inside Corbett?

Private vehicles are not allowed for normal tourism safaris. Visitors must use authorised gypsies with approved drivers and guides, or the designated Dhikala Canter service.

Q. Is Dhikala better than Bijrani for a first visit?

They offer different experiences. Bijrani is convenient for a day Jeep Safari, while Dhikala has a broader grassland-and-reservoir landscape but stricter access through Canter or eligible night-stay bookings.

Q. Can children go on a Corbett safari?

Children can join safaris, but families should prepare for early starts, dust, temperature changes and several hours on rough forest tracks.

Q. Are mobile phones allowed during the safari?

Visitors should follow the current permit and gate instructions. The official Corbett portal highlights a restriction on mobile-phone use within tourism zones of the core habitat of tiger reserves in compliance with a Supreme Court order.

Q. Is Sitabani part of the Corbett Tiger Reserve safari system?

No. Sitabani is a nearby forest tourism area often included in Corbett trips, but it is not one of the main Corbett Tiger Reserve tourism zones listed on the official CTR safari booking system.
