Kalesar National Park is Haryana’s major natural-forest national park, lying in the Shivalik foothills of Yamunanagar district close to the borders of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Declared a National Park in 2003, it covers 4,682.32 hectares, or about 46.82 sq km, and adjoins the larger Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary.
The landscape is dominated by sal and khair forest, seasonal streams, boulder-filled valleys and grass patches. Leopard is the most important resident large carnivore, while elephants and occasionally tigers move through the wider Shivalik-Rajaji landscape. Sambar, barking deer, wild boar, langurs, macaques and rich birdlife are also found here.

Kalesar is particularly useful for travellers looking for an accessible forest outing from Yamunanagar, Paonta Sahib or Dehradun. The Forest Department has three designated motorable safari routes and allows only registered local jeeps for tourism inside the National Park.

Kalesar National Park Timings
The Haryana Forest Department publishes separate summer and winter safari schedules. In summer, the visiting windows are 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In winter, the windows are 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
The park remains closed during July, August and September because of monsoon conditions.
Kalesar National Park Ticket Cost
The Haryana Forest Department fee sheet lists ₹30 for an adult and ₹10 for a child or student.
Safari jeep hire is separate. Registered local jeeps are permitted to enter the National Park and the vehicle charge is paid to the jeep owner according to the prevailing local hiring rate.
Safari Routes
Three motorable routes have been delineated for visitors, together offering roughly 16 km of forest road. The routes pass through sal forest, stream beds and lower Shivalik terrain.
Because the park is small and densely wooded, the experience is more about forest atmosphere and birdlife than high-frequency sightings of large predators.
Wildlife at Kalesar
Leopards are the most significant resident carnivores. Elephants move into the area from the Rajaji side, while tiger presence is occasional rather than permanent.
Sambar, barking deer, wild boar, rhesus macaques and red junglefowl are among the more likely species.
How to Reach Kalesar National Park
By Road
The Yamunanagar-Paonta Sahib road passes through the Kalesar landscape. The park is also accessible from Dehradun.
By Train
Yamunanagar-Jagadhri is the most practical railhead.
By Air
Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport and Chandigarh Airport are the useful air gateways depending on the travel route.
Best Time to Visit Kalesar
November and December offer cool weather and good forest conditions. March to June is warmer but remains an official recommended period.
The park closes in the core monsoon months, so July to September should be avoided.
How Much Time Is Needed?
A half-day safari is enough for a first visit. Visitors coming from Dehradun or Paonta Sahib can comfortably make Kalesar a day trip.
Birdwatchers may prefer a slower full-day plan combining forest edges and nearby Shivalik habitats.
